Another month – another BoxyCharm review! Welcome to my May 2021 BoxyCharm Base Box Review. This month’s base box has a total value of $121.00! BoxyCharm is a monthly makeup subscription that costs $25USD (+5 shipping if you are in Canada like me). Interested in trying out BoxyCharm? Use my referral link here.
This month’s theme was “Flourish”. Each month BoxyCharm gives their base subscribers one choice item in their box. For May, we had the choice between the MURAD City Skin Overnight Detox Moisturizer or Tarte Shape Tape Glow Wand. Keep on reading to find out what products I received in my May 2021 BoxyCharm Base Box!
This facial scrub cleanses the skin by clearing away rough patches and blackheads. It deeply cleans, exfoliates, and brightens dull and congested skin. This facial scrub claims to be formulated for all skin types. It is cruelty, paraben, SLS and phthalate free.
I had never even heard of this brand so I was really excited to try out this facial scrub. I also love a good exfoliator that leaves my skin feeling smooth. The facial scrub was lightly fragranced, but nothing too overwhelming. When you put the product on your hands, there are these thicker crystals in it. You apply it on your skin and then use water to dissolve the crystals. It left my skin feeling smooth and looking bright. The crystals aren’t too abrasive and they dissolved easily. I will definitely be adding this to my skincare rotation.
COST: $29.00 USD / $55.00 CAD (on Amazon.ca)
This priming moisturizer claims to create a smooth canvas that is prepped for makeup application. It contains a coconut water base, minerals, and quinoa protein that is safe for sensitive skin. It has a natural coconut scent and micro-pearls that leave your complexion looking dewy.
The moisturizer has a nice, refreshing scent. It left my skin feeling hydrated and looking super glowy. There was almost like a pore filling effect on my t-zone. This product will be really great for early mornings where you need to help your skin look more awake, but don’t have a lot of time.
COST: $30.00 USD / $40.00 CAD (on Sephora.com)
This liquid eyeshadow has a multi-chrome effect that is supposed to help you create an instantly blended look in one easy application. The colour is supposed to appear to change as the light reflects off the contours of the eye. This product is cruelty free and vegan!
While I am not the hugest fan of liquid eye shadows, I was pretty interested in trying this product. The eyeshadow went on easily, blended well, and didn’t feel sticky like a lot of liquid shadows can. The shadow colour was kind of burgundy on the centre of the lid and more of a deep green in the crease. I think this would be really good for someone who is more of a beginner at makeup or isn’t super into it because it really is that easy! I probably won’t get a lot of use out of it though.
COST: $20.00 USD / ~ $24.00 CAD (based on current exchange rate)
This primer also claims to create the perfect base for makeup application and brighten, soothe, and boost skin radiance. It is supposed to help provide a fresh, oil free, but dewy finish. It is sulfate, paraben, and cruelty free!
The first thing I noticed about the packaging is that there was a spelling error on the box! It said ‘not to late to hydrate’ when I’m pretty sure it should’ve been ‘not too late’ (right? right?!). I couldn’t find any pictures of the packaging or the quote for that matter online so I am unsure if that was an error or what. Box aside – I did like the packaging of the primer because it’s different that most tubed primers because it had a lid. The primer itself was a gel consistency which I love in primers. Unfortunately it was heavily fragranced and not in a pleasant way. It did however, create a nice, smooth and tacky base which is perfect for makeup application.
COST: $15.00 USD / ~ $18.00 CAD (based on current exchange rate)
This was my choice item for this month! It says that there are 4 ways to glow – over concealer, alone for a no makeup magic look, mixed with primer / moisturizer or on the high points of the face. Do people actually typically apply highlight over their concealer? Because I think that’s a little strange. This glow wand is cruelty free and vegan! Alight is described as being an opal glow, but there are 8 shades to choose from.
The product came with a removable sponge which I thought was kind of different. It goes on pretty opaquely than most liquid highlighters that I’ve used, but it blends out really beautifully into a nice sheen glow. I wasn’t sure if I would like the sponge part, but I think it did a really good job. I’m also really happy with the shade I received because I think it goes really well with my skin tone.
COST: $27.00 USD / $35.00 CAD (on Tarte.com)
FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE MAY 2021 BOXYCHARM BASE BOX
I have to say – the May 2021 BoxyCharm Base Box was honestly kind of meh. The primer + moisturizer are two super similar products to have received in the box. I also don’t really see myself using the liquid eyeshadow much. The value of this month’s box was $121 USD / ~ $172.00 CAD. You cannot complain about that value for a $25 box. Even though this box wasn’t my favourite, I would still say I got my money’s worth. What products did you receive in this months box?! Until next time, XX.
