The September BoxyCharm box was the first ever BoxyLuxe box! I was so excited when BoxyCharm announced that they were going to be introducing Luxe boxes, because this is the only subscription box I have at the moment. So the more products I receive the better! The overall value of this box was over $300. Subscribe to BoxyCharm here. Read my review of the BoxyCharm subscription here.

If you follow BoxyCharm or are a subscriber, you are most likely aware of the disaster that was upgrading to BoxyLuxe. Basically, BoxyCharm emailed out a link that allowed subscribers to get added to an “interest list”, then they were supposed to be emailed the morning of the upgrade with a special link that allowed them to upgrade their account.

Unfortunately this did not happen. Some people were getting emails hours after the upgrading option opened. Additionally, signing up for the interest list turned out to be pointless, because you were able to log into your Boxy account and upgrade whether or not you had signed up for the interest list. Their server also crashed that morning because so many people were trying to upgrade at once; therefore, a lot of people were seeing errors and when they finally got through to the page it said that the box was sold out and you could just be added to the wait list.

They had people on Twitter responding to customers saying that the box hadn’t been sold out and that it was an error; however, not one person mentioned that they were going to go through and fix this and manually put people through who were incorrectly wait-listed. As a result, a lot of people – myself included – were removing themselves from the wait-list in order to try and get through and get a BoxyLuxe. After the second time of being wait-listed I just let it be, and was eventually put through to obtain the BoxyLuxe.

I understand the server issues. The BoxyCharm website isn’t used to the kind of traffic that they were experiencing at that time. My main frustration was the failure to properly address what was going on and identify a solution until way after the fact. I also wish they would’ve actually used the interest list and created a system that allowed subscribers to upgraded based on how long they were subscribed continuously for. I think that BoxyCharm over promoted the upgrade, when they should’ve slowly rolled out the Luxe box.

The cost of the BoxyLuxe upgrade was an additional $28.99 USD, every three months since the BoxyLuxe box is a seasonal box. Therefore, subscribers were charged the regular $21 USD for the Boxy as normal PLUS the $28.99 USD for the Luxe upgrade. For some reason this was the most difficult concept for people to understand. I watched a number of live sessions on IG and Facebook because I was trying to find out if they were going to allow Canadian subscribers to participate. The answer to this question was yes, but there is an addition $2 USD charge for shipping on top of the $3 USD that is charged monthly. The luxe box ended up costing me $78.00 CAD which is EXPENSIVE. If this was a monthly subscription upgrade, I would definitely not be able to afford it.

Pretty Vulgar Nightingale Eye shadow Palette

When I saw this palette released as a spoiler for the September BoxyCharm boxes, I wasn’t particularly excited because I don’t really wear cool tones.  I ended up deciding to look on the positive side – I didn’t have a palette like this and thought it would be a good addition to my collection. Pretty Vulgar packaging is not my favourite.  I find it to be kind of cheap looking and I tend to prefer sleek and simple packaging. I was really surprised by the quality of the shadows. They were beautiful, pigmented, and easy to blend. (I accidentally stuck my nail in the shade Clutch when trying to adjust the the pan of Pillow Fight – it did not arrive broken). My one complaint about this palette is I am not sure how to wear the colours, but otherwise I was pleasantly pleased.

Tarte Park Ave Princess Bronzer and Contour Palette

I was really excited to see that this was going to be in the Luxe box. The packaging is sleek and expensive feeling. The contour colours blend beautifully and are very wearable on my skin tone. I don’t really care for the shimmery bronzers, but the matte ones that I will use are a major win in my opinion. This product is not wearable for people a skin tone much darker than mine, which is really disappointing – especially because there was not a variant for this item.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer

This product is worth more than the ENTIRE Luxe box. It is a thicker moisturizer, but it doesn’t leave my skin feeling clogged. My skin always feels hydrated and soft after using it. It smells like fruit loops! I like that it has a push down top that dispenses the product so that you don’t need to use your fingers to get to the product. I would never pay this kind of money for a moisturizer on it’s own, but I really enjoyed getting this in a BoxyCharm box.

Laura Geller beauty Baked Blush-N-Brighten in Tropic Hues

Before receiving my box, I received an email from Boxycharm that contained my personal spoiler that indicated whether I would be getting this blush or the Girlactik highlighter. The email told me I was getting the highlighter, so imagine my disappointment when I opened the box to find this blush. I didn’t expect to get much use out of this blush. In the pan, the colour appears to be a lot more pink than I tend to like my blushes. I was pleasantly surprised when I applied this blush to my cheeks. The colour is extremely sheer and glowy – but doesn’t contain chunky glitter that a lot of blushes contain. It is also quite build-able, which is nice for people like myself who don’t like super rosy blushes.

R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo

R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo

This was another item I was kind of surprised to see in my box. Since I live in Canada, normally items that are in aerosol cans like this dry shampoo aren’t able to be shipped. I also liked the idea of receiving the hair mask because it was an item I knew I would get a lot of use out of. The travel size was also a little disappointing being that this was the Luxe box. The dry shampoo works well, smells nice, and doesn’t require you to spend a lot of time rubbing in white powder like many other dry shampoos on the market do.

Smashbox X Nicol Concilio Photo Finish Primer Water in Serene Greens

I really like that Boxycharm included an influencer collaboration in their box. This primer does the job – it does a decent job priming the skin, refreshening makeup, and setting makeup. My one complaint is that I received the one scent I knew I wouldn’t like. I don’t reach for this often because I can’t stand the smell of it.

Alamar Cosmetics Ojitos Brush Trio

I was really excited to receive another product from Alamar Cosmetics, not to mention one of my favourite part of BoxyCharm is getting to build my brush collection. These brushes are incredibly soft. The blending brush does a flawless job of blending. The shader brush is perfect for applying all over the lid colours or carving out a cut crease. The pencil brush is a stable for tight lining lashes or setting liner in your waterline. My only “complaint” is that I am not a fan of the neon green colour – but that is just personal preference.

Luxie Beauty Pro 732 Airbrush Foundation Brush

This brush was released to charmers before being launched to the public, which I thought was incredibly cool. Luxie brushes created a new pro line, and this airbrush foundation was one of the new pro tools. I don’t normally use brushes to apply my foundation, but I was interested in using this. First of all, this brush is incredibly soft. I almost didn’t want to use it! I love how this brush applies foundation. It doesn’t leave any streaks, and really blends the foundation into your skin. Now I normally apply my foundation using this brush, and then go over it quickly with a damp beauty blender.

SOL de Janeiro Ipanema Sunset Glow Oil

Sol de Janeiro Ipanema Sunset Glow Oil

I was a little confused as to why we were receiving this product in our September box. In my opinion, a glow oil is more of a summer item. BoxyCharm posted a video saying that you could use this product mixed with your foundation to create a more dewy look. The size of this product is HUGE and smells amazing; however, this stuff is extremely sticky. I applied it on my arm to see what it looked like applied to the skin. As much as I liked how it looked, I didn’t like how sticky it was even after I let it dry. I could never imagine mixing this with my foundation after that, but if you have and it worked out – I’d like to hear about it.

*When I went on to the Sol de Janeiro website, I discovered that this product is limited edition. I like when brands include exclusive or limited editions products in our boxes.

Violet Voss Liquid Lipstick in wasted

This Violet Voss liquid lipstick dries down to a comfortable matte quickly. Once dry it is transfer proof. This colour is not my favourite – it is a little more pink than I usually gravitate towards; but, it is still wearable.

The Vintage Cosmetics Headband

The Vintage Cosmetics Company Dolly Makeup Headband

I loved that BoxyCharm included this little headband in the box. This is the kind of stuff I wanted to receive in my box because it’s more fun, lifestyle related. I noticed that there were quite a few people upset with this because it was not a very expensive product. This is an example of an item that I will get use out of, but I never would’ve have purchased  this had I not received it in BoxyCharm. It’s perfect for pulling back your hair while washing your face, doing skincare, and applying your makeup!

*BONUS ITEM* BoxyCharm Merch

BoxyCharm included a bonus item this month, that was this cute BoxyCharm tote. Again, this was another product that people were kind of upset with. This item is a bonus and isn’t included in the total cost of the box. It’s pretty harmless. If you’re not a tote person, you could use it as a reusable shopping bag. I use mine as my work bag to carry all my things such as notebooks, agenda, and my laptop.

The total amount of this box was $335.00 USD / approximately $430 CAD. This value is AMAZING. Overall, I was very happy with my first ever BoxyLuxe box. I look forward to seeing what the December box is like!

Were you able to get your hands on BoxyLuxe? Was it worth it? Until next time – XO.
